Road Repair Fraud Uncovered in Hwaseong City

Greetings, everyone, and thank you for joining us for this week’s edition of GTV. I’m Don Valiant and this is the news from Gyeonggi Province this week. Road Repair Fraud Uncovered in Hwaseong City (0504) Recently, a number road repair companies that falsely claimed payments amounting to KRW 100 million from Hwaseong (화성) City were apprehended. These companies had utilized manipulated photos of 33 work sites to claim payment for work that had not been done. Gyeonggi Province has charged the five contractors and subcontractors involved with fraud and will pursue administrative punishments. ◇ Current Gyeonggi Administration Achieves Significant Investment Inducement (0504) Since the beginning of its term, the current Gyeonggi provincial administration has successfully induced a massive amount of investment totaling KRW 131 trillion from 29 enterprises including SK Hynix. This achievement was revealed in a recent, related provincial study of the period from July 2018 to April this year. These investments also created more than 280 thousand new jobs. Production facilities accounted for the largest investment proportion at KRW 122.8 trillion and 18 thousand new jobs, followed by distribution and tourism at KRW 7.4 trillion and 265 thousand new jobs, and R&D at approximately KRW 1 billion and 5 thousand new jobs. ◇ Playground in the Clouds Opens in Paju City (0506) During Children’s Day on May 5, Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jaemyung (이재명) attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Paju Play Cloud in ‘ubi (유비) park’ of Paju City where he delivered a congratulatory address in which he said that playing is learning for children. Also present at the ceremony were: Paju City Mayor Choi Jong-hwan (최종환), Paju City Council Chairperson Han Yang-su (한양수), National Assembly members Yun Hu-deok (윤후덕) and Park Jeong (박정), and EBS President Kim Myeong-jung (김명중). Established as part of the Gyeonggi Waterside Ecological Park Restoration Projects, Paju Play Cloud was constructed with provincial support of KRW 10 billion granted to the grand prize winner of last year’s ‘1st New Gyeonggi Policy Contest.’ ◇   New Sedum Breed ‘Green Pang’ Developed in Gyeonggi (0506) The Cactus and Succulent Plant Research Center of the Gyeonggi Agricultural Research and Extension Services recently announced the development of a new breed of sedum, a popular flowering plant. Named ‘Green Pang,’ this new sedum breed features dense yellowish green club-like leaves that are thick, hard and less prone to falling off, thus making the plant easy to breed and transport as well as highly sellable. The institute expects that Green Pang will help increase horticultural demand as well as local and international sales, and plans to supply the breed extensively to floricultural farmers from this year. ◇ Large Number of Regulatory Violations by Major Restaurants Uncovered in Gyeonggi (0507) A large number of major restaurants including franchise operations were apprehended in Gyeonggi Province for regulatory violations including the use of ingredients beyond expiration dates and false indication of countries of origin. At a press conference on May 6, Gyeon ggi Province Special Judicial Police Superintendent In Chi-gwon (인치권) announced that violations were uncovered at 89 locations during inspections conducted from April 7 to 16 at 360 franchises and popular restaurants with service areas of more than 150 square meters. These inspections had been undertaken to ensure restaurant food safety prior to an upcoming popular dining-out season. The illegal practices included the storage, use and sale of food items beyond expiration dates at 38 locations, false indication of countries of origin at 33 locations, false indication of menu item ingredients at 5 locations, violation of storage temperature requirements at 10 locations, and other violations at 3 locations. ◇ Gyeonggi Province’s ‘Clean Gyeonggi Ocean Movement’ (0507) On May 6, Gyeonggi Province Vice Governor Lee Yong-cheol (이용철), accompanied by Ansan (안산) City Vice Mayor Lee Jin-chan (이진찬) and Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly Member Won Mi-jeong (원미정), visited Pungdo (풍도) Island of Ansan (안산) City and Dorido (도리도) Island of Hwaseong (화성) City to view the progress of the province’s Clean Gyeonggi Ocean Movement first hand and listen to resident opinions. The Clean Gyeonggi Ocean Movement was launched by the province with the aim of protecting marine resources, improving sea water quality and promoting local tourism. Last year, the province removed illegal facilities from ports, including 76 tents and 43 containers from Oido (오이도) Port, while also collecting 1,505 tons of coastal trash. ◇   Utilization of Public Data for Autonomous Driving Technology Development (0503) On April 30, Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jaemyung (이재명) signed a cooperation agreement with presidents of the Pohang (포항) University of Science and Technology, Kyunghee (경희) University, Seonggyungwan (성균관) University, and Ajou (아주) University, as well as the Advanced Institute of Convergence Technology, to spearhead autonomous driving technology development through the utilization of public data. According to this agreement, the province will participate in related development through cooperative efforts that include the provision of big data generated by the province’s Autonomous Driving Center to the four universities. After signing the agreement, Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jaemyung (이재명) expressed hopes that research and development in autonomous driving can be accelerated through cooperation so as to establish the province as a leader in this field. ◇ Thank you for joining us for this week’s edition of GTV.
